Pathology is the branch of medical science that deals with the study and diagnosis of diseases. It involves the examination of tissues, organs, bodily fluids, and cells to understand the nature and causes of diseases. Pathologists play a crucial role in the healthcare system by helping to determine the correct diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options for patients.

There are several sub-disciplines within pathology, including:

  • Anatomical Pathology: This branch focuses on the examination of tissues and organs obtained through biopsies, autopsies, or surgical specimens. Anatomical pathologists analyze the microscopic structure of these samples to diagnose diseases such as cancer, infections, and inflammatory conditions.
  • Clinical Pathology: Also known as laboratory medicine, clinical pathology involves the analysis of bodily fluids such as blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid. Clinical pathologists perform tests to detect and monitor diseases, assess organ function, and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments.
  • Molecular Pathology: This field combines pathology with molecular biology and genetics. Molecular pathologists study the genetic and molecular changes that occur in diseases, helping to diagnose genetic disorders, identify specific mutations in cancers, and determine the effectiveness of targeted therapies.
  • Forensic Pathology: Forensic pathologists investigate deaths that occur under suspicious or unnatural circumstances. They perform autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death, which can be crucial in legal investigations.

Pathologists work closely with other healthcare professionals, including clinicians, surgeons, radiologists, and oncologists, to provide accurate diagnoses and guide treatment decisions. They often collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive patient care.
